::\Last Flight/::
The beating of wings attracted my attention. I turned abruptly, then searched the area for a bird. After a few seconds, I finally spotted a speckled brown eagle huddling close to the edge of the cliff. I gasped, then immediately ducked into a bush. I took out my binoculars and peered through them at the creature. It seemed as if it was terribly worn out, its eyes had lost its shine and its feathers all ruffly. It looked old, too old. I frowned, then studied closer.
The eagle raised it head to gaze at the sapphire blue sky for a few minutes, then laid its head back down on the hard sand. It closed its eyes, but the rising and falling of its fragile body told me it was still alive. The wind ruffled its soft feathers, but it did not stir. I urged to go up front and awake the eagle, but something told me not to. An unseen barrier of air seemed as if to repel every living thing from it.
After a few hours of squatting and studying the dying eagle, it finally opened its eyes. Initially, I thought it had recovered and regained its strength once again. But who was to know, it was to call out its last cry. The shrieking cry of the eagle pierced through the air and resounded in my ears. I cringed at the sadness ringing in the atmosphere, but felt enormously helpless. Finally, the eagle pulled down its eyelids and let out its last breath. The silhouette of the eagle against the sunset triggered tears in me. I could not help but let out a cry when I realised the shape of the eagle.
Its wings were open, open wide and stretched out. Those very wings used to take its owners up into the highest of the skies and then back to the ground's safety. Those very wings once used to cut through the cold winter's air and the hot summer's heat. But now, they were helpless. I emerged from the bushes after a few minutes, then took one last glance at the eagle. It seemed as if it was flying... dreaming of flying. Dreaming of taking its last flight...
