::\Positioning/::
On Friday, we had Chemistry laboratory lesson. Mrs Kee was telling us who were in for Chemistry remedial and my name was called. Yea, nothing unusual, I know my Chemistry isn't all that good. So yea, I was kinda relieved that I could finally get help. I ain't those type who will tell a teacher that I'm weak and stuff, so yep!
Anyway, my name was called, and I could almost hear waves of whisper going around the room. Char and Qiannie immediately turned around and glared at me and started firing questions, telling me they didn't know and all. Then, it was Gab's turn. He started by saying "Si Yun! I thought you were fourth in class?". I was struck dumb by that sentence. I didn't know what to retaliate for a second or two. Thanks to Claire who saved me, ticked him off a little for me.
But what really made me think was that very question.
I thought you were fourth in class?"
Fourth in class. That was last year. And, yea, even then, my Chemistry wasn't all that good either. My other subjects pulled me up, helped me. But, does the first five, first ten, even first twenty in the class have to be an all-rounder? Does the class positioning really matter that much? Does it tell my future, say that I will be third the next year or something? No, it doesn't. I have no clue why people just link one year to the next. Aren't years supposed to be start afresh? I mean, yea, years can be linked, but positioning wise, I doubt so. You have to work hard each year to get the position you deserve.
Let's just say, if I work really hard in year 1, and I am positioned first in class. Yea, people will have the impression that I am smart, clever and all sorts. But, if I loosen up a little in year 2, slack a little more, and end up tenth in position. Why will people be surprised, shocked? I mean, hey, each year is different on its own. It really depends on the person's mentality and character, doesn't it?
Besides, does positioning matter that much? In my opinion, I think otherwise. Positioning are just mere numbers. What really matters is whether one learnt in that year, whether one really put in his/her effort. Some people are smarter than others naturally, so of course these people will have higher positions if they choose to work as hard as those who are less smart. Positioning doesn't really help. It just creates fueds, makes competition stronger, makes students hate each other more.
The government just decided to make do with the positioning of the Junior Colleges, and well, I guess that's a terribly clever move. JC students won't be all that stressed any longer, and the competition will be friendlier. I mean, hey, who wants to work in a hostile environment?
